People are amazing! The bodies we humans inhabit are simply astounding. The more science discovers about the uniqueness of humans and their potential for...well, just about anything, the more amazed I am!
Here are some fun facts I discovered...did you know:
Your heart can sync to the rhythm when you listen to music.
The brain’s storage capacity is unlimited as the brain consists of 86 billion neurons and these neurons form connections to others, rounding up to a total of 1,000 trillion.
Our brain re-writes the memory each time we think of it, slowly altering it or twisting it over time.
Humans can see more shades of green than any other color.
Information zooms along nerves at about 400kmph!
Quite something…and to think, we are the caretakers of such wonderful works of creation. A privilege and a responsibility. And it goes beyond that. For those in positions of influence and leadership, we are afforded the privilege and responsibility to contribute to the care and growth of others.
However, it is imperative that we also take seriously the responsibility of self-care AND self-growth. I’m referring to our own development, beyond mental, emotional, and spiritual. Intellectual growth is something that all too quickly gets pushed aside by those of us who are deeply committed to the growth of those we lead.
I’m currently challenged to make time for personal reflection—equally challenged to consider what I want the reflection to focused on.
Reflection = giving serious thought or consideration
Since 2020 and the arrival of a global pandemic, our focus has been on supporting team members, students, those we provide care for…and rightfully so. Managers and leaders have been called on to quickly train for the new skills thrust upon them as the result of a new way of working. And they rose to the occasion—kudos all around!
There was no time for reflection, no time to take a step back and give serious thought and consideration to what needed to be done. But now it's time...time to reflect, and grow.
How are you developing yourself to lead in a flexible workforce? In a previous blog. I wrote about the difference between training and developing.
The way I see the two is that training focuses on the skills I need to do the 'job' right now, while development is more about learning new skills and techniques for the future.
As leaders, we are responsible for self-leadership and creatively seeking ways to develop our skills and techniques for an exciting future. And then? Making time to reflect on what we have just read, heard, watched, and discovered…giving it serious thought and consideration.
The next step is where the impact and growth truly happen—once
you’ve had time to reflect, and share it with others. This is guaranteed to deepen your learning and enrich those with whom you dare to share a new thought, idea, or innovation.
This is the joy of learning.
